How To Help Seniors Age In-Place

Updated: Feb 21, 2023

"Aging is an extraordinary process where you become the person you always should have been.” David Bowie.

Whether you are aging in-place or helping a loved one navigate this path, here are some tips to help make that journey safe and fulfilling.

Tip #1 - Remove Rugs

One in four people over the age of 65 will fall this year. Perform a quick inventory of your or your loved one's home and remove those items that can cause an issue. Rugs can create a tripping hazard and removing them is an easy inexpensive fix.

Tip #2 - Create a Support Network

Establish a circle of friends and family that check-in at regular intervals. Whether it is a "meal train" or just a quick cup of coffee to catch up. Regular checks can ensure that you or your loved one is safe. In addition, aging results in a tremendous amount of wisdom and insight. Those participating in the process will find that they get more out of these visits than they imagined.

“Of all the experiences we need to survive and thrive, it is the experience of relating to others that is the most meaningful and important.” – Louis Cozolino, Professor of Psychology at Pepperdine University from his book, Timeless: Nature's Formula for Health and Longevity.

Tip #3 - Don't Be Afraid to Ask for Help

Whether you are aging in-place or helping someone you love, please know that you are not expected to have all of the answers. Although this process can be rewarding and fulfilling, it is complex. Seek out professionals and organizations that can provide support.
